Kara was born and raised in rural Washington State (Northwest USA) on a small farm riding Quarter Horses and driving her family’s 6-horse hitch of Sorrel Percherons. Shortly after completing her veterinary training at Washington State University in 2004, she moved to New Zealand and has been here ever since.

Kara enjoys the challenges of equine practice but her special interests are in Equine Reproduction and Equine Sports Medicine. She has combined her clinical experience with special courses in these areas, including embryo transfer training in Australia and ultrasound courses focusing on equine lameness. She enjoys working with and supporting her equine clients.

Dr Melissa Sim DVM

Melissa grew up in Singapore and Thailand and has always loved working with horses. She moved to the USA for university and completed a BSc in Animal Science from UC Davis, and her veterinary degree from Purdue. She then went on to do an equine internship at The Equine Clinic at OakenCroft, a busy ambulatory equine general practice in New York, to better her skills and knowledge. She also rereceived post-graduate certification in equine acupuncture through Curacore.She moved to New Zealand in 2017 and is thoroughly enjoying being a Kiwi.

Melissa enjoys all aspects of equine practice, but her special interests lie in sports medicine and ophthalmology. Her favourite part of her job is working together with horses and the people that love them to make a difference in their lives.

Dr Kendra McLeod DVM

Kendra is a Florida native and following vet school she furthered her veterinary training by becoming certified in equine acupuncture and veterinary chiropractic. She has previously worked in both NZ and Australia, including being a lecturer at the University of Adelaide Veterinary School. She joined the team in July 2018 and is enjoying meeting you and your horses.

Kendra is one of only a few certified veterinary chiropractors in New Zealand. Chiropractic focuses primarily on restoring normal range of motion and movement in the spinal column. During these treatments, she uses her hands to manipulate the joints and is effective even with subtle movements when the horse is relaxed.

Dr Catherine Pemberton BVSc

Catherine joined Franklin Vets in February 2021. She hails from South Auckland and graduated from Massey University in 1992.  Since graduation, she has worked in mixed and equine practice in Kumeu, a referral equine practice in the UK and more recently in equine practice in Auckland.  She has completed post-graduate courses in equine dentistry and ultrasonography.  Catherine enjoys all aspects of equine practice with a special interest in wound healing and hoof problems.

In her spare time, she assists her brother in training a few standardbreds and chasing pukekos out of her vege garden.

Emma joined Franklin Vets in late 2020. She is studying to be a Vet Tech with Otago Polytech and enjoys getting out and meeting all our friendly equine clients.

In her spare time, Emma enjoys riding and competing on her horses in western performance.

Sandra Fisher

Sandra has worked in veterinary clinics for many years, and joined the Franklin Vets team in mid-2016. Locally born and bred, Sandra and her family now live on a lifestyle block in Glenbrook surrounded by a collection of livestock and pets, mainly horses.

She has a long equine background having family involved over the years with both Standardbreds, Thoroughbreds and Sport Horses.
