Committed to meaningful change

We are committed to making our world a better place and we have embarked on our sustainability journey. We are approaching this from an Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) perspective, and have a number of initiatives in each space.

Environmental

In FY24, our carbon emissions reached 497.92 tonnes CO₂e. The main contributors were vehicle fuel, domestic waste, anaesthetic gases, and electricity.

Bold goal

We’ve set a target to cut emissions by 30% by 2035, reducing intensity to under 10g CO₂e per dollar.

Our roadmap includes:
  • Installing solar panels
  • Transitioning to plug-in hybrid vehicles
  • Reducing domestic waste
  • Exploring sustainable anaesthesia alternatives
  • Offering aquamation as a more sustainable choice for afterlife care.

Current initiatives

Royal Canin & Terracycle

We’ve installed TerraCycle bins at our Pukekohe, Papakura, Beachlands, Karaka, Waihi & Kopu clinics for Royal Canin packaging. Clients and staff love it—just drop off your empty food bags and clean pouches.

What is Terracycle?

Zoetis & Futurepost

Teatseal Recycling – Used teatseal tubes are sent to Future Post (Waikato), where waste plastic is transformed into 100% recyclable, premium fencing products that outperform wood.
Livestock Vaccinations – Vaccine packs are collected at clinics, then transported by Plasback NZ to Future Post, supporting the same recycling process.

Vaxipak® & AgRecovery

Drop your empty vaxipacks into collection bins at our vet clinics.
If not fully empty, cut off the top or use a vaccinating gun/syringe to remove contents.
No need to remove the metal bung, draw‑off tube, or necktie—sorting sites handle these.
Collected vaxipacks are couriered to Te Awamutu processing sites, where they’re sorted, cleaned, and consolidated before being transformed into new products as part of the circular economy.

Products

We are making a concerted effort to ensure we take responsibility for the products we buy and sell.

Keep an eye out for:
  • Certified Compostable Dog Waste Bags from REFORM
  • THE ReGLOVE - a new, green, more sustainable, and recycled plastic shoulder-length glove that is helping to improve our sustainability footprint. Developed by one of our Veterinarians, Dr Jennifer Stone, they are manufactured using 100% post-consumer recycled plastic and certified under the Global Recycled Standard.

Aquamation

Aquamation is a gentle, water-based alternative to traditional flame cremation. It uses around 90% less energy than flame cremation and produces no harmful emissions, resulting in a significantly smaller carbon footprint. The process mirrors natural systems, returning pets to nature in a calm and respectful way.

Social

Franklin Vets is committed to the wellbeing of our team. Initiatives include:

  • A robust and ever-evolving Health & Safety policy.
  • EAP for our team and their families.
  • A Diversity, Equity and Inclusion policy.
  • Mental health awareness activities (check out these charcuterie boards made by our teams).
  • Fully Charged & Leading the Charge programmes for all team members to help teams reduce stress, boost energy, build habits for mental clarity, and reconnect with what matters most.
  • Internal training capability with set pathways for new Customer Service team members, Vet Techs and LA Vets, with other roles under development.
  • Commitment to being a good community citizen by supporting local sports clubs, schools, and the arts.

Governance

Franklin Vets' senior leadership team, in close collaboration with the Board of Directors and through active engagement with shareholders, leads the development and execution of our strategy across operations and decision-making. Our governance framework includes specialised board committees and is underpinned by a comprehensive suite of policies, which continue to evolve as we identify and address gaps.
This includes:

  • A 2040 Vision, including our benefit to the long-term well-being of the economy, environment, and society.
  • A comprehensive range of policies, with the agility to develop new ones when a gap is identified.
  • Supply Chain - products used in veterinary work and sold to customers come from all over the world. When information is available, current product selection criteria include sustainability and ethical sourcing.
  • Climate risk – a disaster response policy is under development.
